Murah Soares Afro-Brazilian Dance
Performance  -  Choreography

This percussion-dance performance of the extraordinary dancer Murah Soares and master percussionist Dudu Tucci and ensemble, is dedicated to the deities of the Afro-Brazilian religion "Candomblé Ketu".
Laden with energy, the artists present a unique collage in which ritual rhythms blend with poetic folk tradition. Dudu Tucci and Murah Soares have already collaborated successfully on various projects, including "Dance of the Elements" (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) and Afoxé Loni " (Karneval der Kulturen).

Carried by the Atabaque drum´s hypnotic beats and the gripping dance performance the two artists transport their audience into the mythical world of the Afro-Brazilian gods and goddesses. Each deity has its own dance, in which specific characteristics and personality traits are expressed. The movements of the dance are reflected in the patterns of the drumbeats, creating a unity between music and dance whose rhythms and solo phrases follow definite rules, handed down by tradition. Take, for example, Xangó, the god of fire and justice. Dressed in his colours of red and white he appears with two bowls of flaming fire and his insignia of two double-bladed axes, symbolizing power and strength. Dance and solo drums being deeply connected to each other, they bring Xango´s specific characteristics alive in the powerful and dynamic rise and fall in the Atabaque drums´ language. Murah Soares´ development as a dancer was strongly influenced by the Afro-Brazilian culture and its traditional dance style, once brought to Brazil by African slaves. The special appeal of this repertoire lies in the diversity of these various Brazilian ethnic dances, their percussion instruments and extraordinary costumes, in which traditional and contemporary compositions enchant the audience.

As already in Korea, Ireland, Great Britain, Italy, Norway and - last but not least- Germany they hypnotize enthusiastic audiences everywhere with their expressiveness and emotionality, as well as technical perfection.
